“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” - Jer 17:9 (KJV)

The Scripture has different names for the mind. It is called mainly as "mind", "heart" and "soul", depending on who was writing, the time or dispensation of the writing and the language at the time of writing. Ultimately they point to the same "app" in man, which like the communication apps, can be corrupted; so, "the soul" (app) that sinneth (gets corrupted) shall die (deleted).

This "app" in man, is like a radio and has become empowered through Adam's disobedience, to receive signals from two sources, Light and Darkness, giving birth to two kinds of mind. No; not that man is carrying two different minds, rather, this is in the usage and development of the mind. What we allow in can either kill us (delete us from God's presence), or build us God-ward.

“Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind.” - Col 2:18 (KJV)

“For to be carnally minded is death...” - Romans 8:6a (KJV)

This is the first mind, undeveloped mind. The owner is careless of the information that enters his mind and refusing to exercise it with the word of God. Paul talked about exercising the senses. And God talked about retaining Him, which does not come easy but possible through practice. In our Christian walk, we have fallen severally, yet coming back up again. Retaining God takes exercise. Whoever fails to retain God in their knowledge is one who is failing to exercise the Word and consequently allowing corruption into the mind (the heart, the soul, or senses depending on what you choose to call it), leaving it as "flesh" or "carnal". This first kind of mind is the unregenerate mind, and an enemy of God.

“Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.” - Romans 8:7 (KJV)

The second kind of mind is the one whose owner quests for, hungers and thirsts for Truth and desires to retain God in their knowledge. This mind is developed with the word of God, which like the antivirus, also garrisons the mind, protecting it from pollution, "for when the enemy comes in as a flood, the Spirit of God will lift up a standard."

“…but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” - Romans 8:6b (KJV)

Each of these two minds want supremacy over the body, so a battle ensues, leading to confusion and in most cases ignorance of what to do. This is the battle Apostle Paul reported in Romans 7:23.

But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.” - Romans 7:23 (KJV)

These warring powers are spirits.

“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.” - 1 Cor 2:12-15 (KJV)

These two spirits alone can affect the mind. Nothing from outside man can pollute the man or defile him. The threat to him is what he processes in his mind; things that came from either God, or from the forces of darkness; both from within.

What he permits to dwell in his heart is his defilement. In his ignorance of this two windows however, he can be hurt by outside forces.

How?

The enemy delights in and thrives on the ignorance of the children of God. Using his ignorance of the word, the enemy injects fear into the believer and this separates him from God. God cannot co-habit with fear neither does He operate in an atmosphere of fear; "for God has not given us the spirit of fear ..." (2 Tim. 1:7)

That is why God warned Jeremiah. Though I am sending you, I will not defend you if you allow fear into your life!

“Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I command thee: be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound thee before them.” - Jer 1:17 (KJV)

So if the enemy can inject fear into the believer, he can succeed against him, as God, through the ignorance of the man stays away. (Rom. 1:28)

Ignorance is the killer of gods!!!

“They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course. I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.  But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.” - Psalms 82:5-7 (KJV)

It is absolutely necessary for us to retain the word of God; as Apostle Paul would say "let the words of Christ dwell in you richly, and in all wisdom" (Col. 3:16), because this is the way to overcome the dragon "..and by the word of their testimony..."( Rev. 12:11)

What defiles the man is not from outside him; and not really the information he receives, but what he does with the information!

And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.” - Mark 7:20 (KJV)

That is why we need to guard our hearts, and with all diligence.

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” - Prov 4:23 (KJV)

Information is what can affect your heart, either positively or negatively!! Physical things like hair, fingernails, adornments, etc, cannot affect or pollute you.

Your mode of dressing does not pollute you. It can affect your neighbour; yes, but not you!

We'll leave this for some other time.

As said earlier, this is our battle, our warfare. In this battle, we decide the victory or defeat by our decision. It is not just the information received, but what we do with the information; therein lies our victory or defeat!  (1kgs. 20:14c)

What would you do with the other information in your members, warring against the instructions of the Lord in your mind fighting to bring you into captivity and bondage? God is interested!!!!

It is not easy, yet if you compromise, you will be defeated.

Now look at if from this scripture.

1kgs 20

Ben-hadad, the king of Syria came with his forces and besieged Samaria, the then capital of Israel. He knew he was more powerful military wise than Ahab and Israel and came to conquer, occupy and put her under tribute.

Information came to Ahab from two sources. Ben-hadad sent a message of fear, God sent a message of hope. A choice was set before the king. For the first time Ahab did a good thing. He pulled down the voice of fear but hearkened to the voice of hope, the voice of God.

Like Samaria, the mind is besieged by the forces of darkness with all kinds of demonic suggestions and desires in its quest to take over our minds and consequently our bodies. These suggestions and projections into our minds rise against the word of God and against our knowledge of Him.

The point of choice is always where we are defeated!  We allow our emotions to have the better of us!

When Ben-hadad had been defeated and was to be killed, Ahab worked by emotion, sparing his life for material gains and giving room for the Syrians to come back stronger (1 Kings 22), killed Ahab and defeated Israel. That is the consequence of compromise.

Ahab made a fatal mistake, which today, we still make: being insensitive in the choice we make. We allow emotion to lead our decisions.

Two instructions come into our minds all the time. Who would we believe? The Voice of the Lord? Or the voice of the enemy besieging our minds, and rising against our knowledge of His word?

Hear Paul

“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” - 2 Cor 10:5 (KJV)

This is an excerpt from a message delivered on the 16th of December 2012 by Deacon Lanre Afolabi.

“MAN’S NEED OF SALVATION”

Man since the fall of Adam, was on a steady fall and decay, consequently spreading death upon everything in his world which includes his home, his business, his health and all.

“But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnessess are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” - Isaiah 64:6 (KJV)

Man and everything about him decays slowly, “fades”, being carried away from the presence of God. Nothing he did could save him, and the decay continued unchecked, and undoubtedly, had a need of Salvation.

“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one ……….. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” - Romans 3:10, 23 (KJV)

The coming of Jesus has set us free from this bondage to corruption, setting things right between Man and God and opening to Man the door to a rest that is not of this world.

What we go through now are consequences of our past deeds, since coming to Christ!

“………though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will I not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished.” – Jer. 30:11c (KJV)

As a Father God disciplines us when we fall out with Him. When you continue to live in rebellion to God and His word, situations and circumstances of this world would defy and resist you because only when you obey God would you be able to punish disobedience.

However, if you repent you will hear Him speak; and He will speak peace to your life. Be faithful.

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. 30 I and my Father are one.” - John 10:27-30 (KJV)

“But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” - John 20:31 (KJV)

THE CORE!

There is no time in the history of the Church as now when we need to fumigate our spiritual lives, killing off the spiritual pests that trouble us; and make straight the way of the Lord.

“And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. 2 And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me. 3 And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. 4 And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 5 And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the LORD. 6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play. And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves: 8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. ……..And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:) 26 Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD'S side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him. 27 And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour. 28 And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.” - Ex. 32:1-8; 25-28

For centuries, theologians have said that Aaron lied about throwing gold in the fire and out jumped the calf. But, Moses never said he lied! Yes, to the natural man, this could be the greatest lie in the history of mankind. What if he did not lie!

There are things that we cannot see with the naked eyes, yet we cannot deny their existence. Aaron could have seen one of those. But how would he explain to people what they couldn’t see? Sometimes it is very difficult, almost impossible explain to others what they cannot see, how much more a spiritual thing!

In Psalm 22, David narrated what Jesus saw behind the actions of men.

“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? ……..He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him……….Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. 13 They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. 14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. 16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. 18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. 19 But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me. 20 Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.” - Psalms 22:1,8,12-20 (KJV)

These are not the words of David but of the Lord Jesus! You see David was a prophet and one so dear to the heart of God; he was permitted a peek into what the Messiah would go through on the Cross.  There is no place in Scripture where David’s garment was parted (vs. 18) or cast on lot. Neither is it recorded that his hands and feet were pierced (vs.16).

Jesus on the Cross saw “bulls of Bashan” (vs.12) and “dogs” (vs. 16), the forces of darkness that influenced man against God, prompting His prayer, “Forgive them for they know not what they do.”

There were unseen forces at play around the Cross which were also at play in the wilderness in the days of Aaron; even today those forces are still at work, which is why we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” - Eph 6:12 (KJV) Humans are not our enemies, there are forces influencing them that cannot be seen!

Aaron saw something others did not see.

CORRUPTION!!!

Corruption
has crept into Church! Lets be watchful!!

WHAT IS FELLOWSHIP?

With this definition, I am tempted to ask if we can really have fellowship with God? Especially considering what John said in 1John 1:3

“That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.” - 1 John 1:3 (KJV)

John had been having meetings with these people whom he called "my little children" (1 John 2:1). But he says "that you may have fellowship with us". What could this mean? He has been having meetings with these people but not fellowship!

So it is possible to have church meetings yet not have fellowship. You come to church, I see you, you see me, and we interact and possibly exchange pleasantries yet not have fellowship! Fellowship is deeper than meeting! Can we really have fellowship with the Father if it is possible to meet yet not have fellowship with man?

I can imagine believers meeting under a tree and a dog, perhaps seeing the owner there, lies at his side. Certainly the dog, though there could not be said to have fellowship with the people. Why? It is not of the same nature with man! Man's ways differ from the dog’s, so no matter how close they can't have fellowship.

God's ways differ from ours.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” - Isaiah 55:8-9 (KJV)

God's nature differs from ours; His is a nature of Spirit and righteousness. Man, through Adam, lost this nature, acquiring the nature of sin, wickedness and lie. Consequently, natural man cannot have fellowship with God. Nothing of man can have fellowship with God!

But this is the reason God made man, to have fellowship with him. He desires it and so, calls Man to share or partake in His divine nature.

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” – 2 Peter 1:4 (KJV)

Despite this awesome invitation, many even in the household of Faith - the Church, still fall short because of worldly pleasures: the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life.

It is possible for you to be at table, having a sumptuous meal and I come visiting; sincerely from the depth of your heart you invite me to share, join or "partake" in your meal, and for one reason or another I decline the offer. God desires to share His nature with us but for various reasons this offer is being declined, though we still go to church: singing, dancing, preaching and teaching nevertheless, no fellowship with God.

John made this statement, because like Paul, he had turned his back on the world and all it could offer. He had “tasted” God, “seen and handled” and come to a level where he could truly share God's nature and so could fellowship with the Father.
